- The Société Française d'Ophtalmologie (SFO) was founded on January 29, 1883, by Paul Chibret, initially bringing together 42 ophthalmologists from France, Switzerland, Belgium, and Spain. It was recognized as a public utility on July 13, 1927.
- The SFO has a rich history of annual meetings held in various prestigious locations in Paris and has been publishing significant works since 1890. Since 1998, it has grown into the largest International Francophone Society of Ophthalmology, with 6,673 members, including 4,280 French and 2,393 foreign members.
