- The Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO) is a non-profit organization that has been active since 1939. It aims to provide continuing education for ophthalmologists, prevent blindness, and encourage cultural and scientific exchange among ophthalmologists in the Western Hemisphere and beyond.

Who founded the PAAO?
- Due to the interruption of the International Congress of Ophthalmology in Europe caused by World War II, the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO) was created in May 1939 by Harry S. Gradle MD, Moacyr Alvaro MD, and Conrad Berens MD. The aim was to establish a new international forum for ophthalmology in the Americas to facilitate the exchange of scientific information and the development of programs for the restoration of sight.
